Abstract

PERCEPTION OF POETRY IN PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Poetry is a special type of Children's Literature, where children are familiar with lullabies, play rhymes, rhythms, repetitions and shortness since childhood. The language based on emotions and dreams is one of the effective tools of language teaching studies with the pleasure of reading as well as listening. Poetry as a tool of language and literature education is not emphasized sufficiently at all levels of education, and studies conducted in this field reveal that students and teachers are hesitate from poetry and have difficulty in interpretation of poem. The study is conducted to determine the perceptions of primary school students in poetry. It is applied in the 2nd and 4th grades of primary school. The poem of Üstün Dökmen named as “Selam” is read to the students and students are asked to write the first color that came to their minds after listening to the poem. It is analyzed whether the same poem is perceived by students with the same color and common perception can be achieved. Does the primary school students' mind which has not yet been mixed up and stacked with information perceive the same poem with the same pictures and figures? The answers to these questions are searched and students are asked to paint the picture of poem after the second reading of the poem. It is observed that all children are able to perceive poetry and that 4th grade students are more successful than 2nd grade students. Therefore, teaching poetry has an effect on the students' perception of poem.
