Abstract


AN AID EPIC: SHEIKH SULEYMAN HAMDI OF QADIRI’S MANZUME-I ISTIMDADIYYE
This article which aims to study Sheikh Suleymân Hamdi of Kadirî's manzûme-i istimdaddiye was firstly intended to explain "istimdâd" as a concept, then featured its usage in literature. Some assesments were made about Shiekh Suleyman Hamdi and his divan has been introduced according to his poems. After thathis manzume i istimdaddiye has been evaluated by its from and content. The comparative transcription text has been attached to the end of the study. Istimdad, which is a mystical term means to beg for help from prophets' or saints' spirits for easement. Thus istimdaddiye -or istimdadname- is the name given to these works in verse. This subject is one of the commons in classic turkish literature and religious-mystical turkish literature. Shiekh Suleyman Hamdi, whose life is still uncertain, is one of the representatives of 19th century mystical turkish literature. He is an associate of Kadiri order. His only known work is divan. There are poems written both in syllabic and aruz metre. The subject of this work "manzume-i istimdadiyye" has been identified as independent in the National Library of Manuscripts Collection in a small macmua registered at 06 Mil Yze 4394/1. As a result of the researches, Hamdi’s divan, registered 06 Mil Yz FB 472, has been reached and it was seen that the said poem was the first text of Hamdi’s Divan. In this case; there are two copies of this istimdaddiye, one of which is independent and the other is in the divan. This poem is the length of 111 stanzas, written in 11-syllable metre (hendecasyllable). The poet is begging poetically via religious and cult leaders mainly like. Hz. Mohammad, some other prophets, twelve imams. According to the names the poet said, this poem is a succession written in verse. In this istimdadname Hamdi sincerely expressed his beliefs; he didn’t worry about art, thus making his work geniune, not artificial or forced.
