Abstract

EMPRESSIONISM WITH SISLEY'S LANDSCAPES
Alfred Sisley is among the founders of Impressionist painting. His work mainly focused on rural landscapes. There is not one single impressionist painter as faithful to landscape picture as Sisley. Mainly a painter of rural areas of Paris, Sisley depicts the seasonal changes of nature admiringly. Despite the difficulties of drawing in winter, the snow scenes made with his poetic style are unique to the art of painting. In this study, Sisley's art and contribution to impressionist painting is explained by referencing examples of his works. It was thought that Sisley's dialogue with Impressionist artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Bazille, and the determination of their relation to art environment, would be useful in the sense of Sisley's paintings. For this purpose, Sisley's artistic trend and the beginning of his art life are explained. Furthermore, the people who influenced Sisley's art life and the conditions under which his works were produced are mentioned. At last, a technical analysis of the Sisley’s pictures is done, which are thought to be typical. The driving forces in the election of Sisley among the Impressionist painters are his playing second fiddle to the pioneering impressionists such as Monet and Renoir and also due to the fact of the shortage of knowledge in artistic and academic resources about him. It was thought that this research would be somewhat a useful step forward to explain Sisley. In order to finalize the study, various art books and related articles were reviewed. In addition, museum web sites where Sisley's paintings are located have been examined and the statements made about his paintings are scanned. Along with the obtained data, the analysis of Sisley's paintings was done. The foremost feature of Sisley's painting is ascertained to be his producing typically empresionist paintings while framing his works in the classical compositional configuration with his addition of a novel approach in the use of colour.
