Abstract
CAUSES OF PROPENSITY FOR ELITE VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS TO TAKE UP VOLLEYBALL AND THEIR EXPECTATIONS
This study aims to find out the causes of propensity for elite volleyball players in Turkey to take up volleyball branch, their expectations and reasons of involvement. A survey method was used in the study. The population for the study was made of elite volleyball players in Turkey. The measurement instrument was administered to who playing elite volleyball player 110 (50 women χ=23.44±4.08, 60 men χ=26.56±5.31) at first leagues in Turkey. The data obtained in this study did not show a normal distribution, consequently survey was tested by the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis analysis test. Elite volleyball players indicated that their families had more influence on their decision to take up this branch. On the other hand volleybal players indicated that teachers of physical education have had influence on their decision. Athletes considered the enjoyment of success as an important reason for engaging in volleyball, while joining a group of friends easily was considered unimportant. It was found that volleybal players in the national team had higher expectation than those not in the national team for enjoyment of success, obtaining material gains and being famed nationwide. It was further found out that as the length of time of involvement in volleyball increased, the desire increased for obtaining material gains, becoming famed, becoming a trainer, a referee, being famed nationwide, enjoying success and getting in the national team.
