Abstract
A GENERAL OUTLOOK TO THE STUDIES ON THE ANXIETY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING
The aim in this study is to support the studies on foreign language anxieties by synthesizing the foreign language teaching studies in Turkey and in other countries in general. A qualitative research design was employed. The evaluation and presentation of the domestic and international studies on the anxiety of foreign language can be useful especially to academicians, and the instructors teaching Turkish as a foreign language, and to the scientists studying on the anxiety in foreign language teaching. A document analysis method was used to collect data. In this study, the anxiety of foreign language is briefly defined, and primarily the definition of the anxiety of foreign language first introduced by Hortwiz et al in 1986 (Foreing Language Anxiety), and other examples of the studies on the anxiety of foreign language that covered the physical and emotional reactions of the anxiety of foreign language, the role of anxiety in learning foreign language, and the anxiety of speaking a foreign language in various countries including Turkey, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, Greece, and India are given. This study also includes a general outlook to, and evaluation of the studies on the anxiety of foreign language. The studies on the anxiety of reading and test, the anxiety of verbal communication, and the relation between the anxiety of test and success in learning English made at the Turkish universities were analyzed to evaluate the anxiety studies made in Turkey.
