FOREIGN STUDENTS’ EXPESSING THE CULTURE OF THEIR TARGET LANGUAGE THROUGH WRITING: GAZİANTEP SAMPLE
Language teaching and culture transfer in writing training occupy a quite important position. Culture is a treasure accommodating the secret codes of a nation that holds throughout centuries. One needs to learn about the culture of a nation in order to understand it. Culture transfer is of capital importance regarding the teaching of Turkish language to foreigners. The fact that culture transfer is limited to reading passages solely is a fallacy. Since students interact with people and environment who experience that specific culture in their everyday lives, culture transfer ought to be perforned regarding all language skills. Under the circumstances, writing classes are vital to have students obtain permanent comprehension while writing.
We all come across the cultural element entities as folk literature products such as tales, anecdotes, sagas, proverbs, idioms in Turkish language coursebooks. Yet, these are not solely sufficient concerning culture transfer. We have classified our study under the headings of “Everyday Life, Interpersonal Relations, Values and Education, Literature-Art and Music, Traditions and Folklore, Social Life, Geography and Location” and tried to present how students transfer the cultural elements that they reveal as a result of their impressions about the place they live in (Gaziantep) into writing classes.
