Abstract
AN INVESTIGATION INTO STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING: AKSARAY UNIVERSITY SAMPLE
This study aims at determining Aksaray University students’ attitudes to foreign language learning and whether there is a significant relation between their gender and the faculties that they study with their attitudes to the language teaching. The study was carried out with the freshmen who attended to the faculties of Aksaray University: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Engineering in 2009-2010 academic year. The population of the present study includes, randomly selected, 457 freshmen from 17 departments at those faculties. The Attitude Scale towards Foreign Languages by Toker (1999) was applied to the students. The scores of 333 students, who answered the questions in the scales entirely, were evaluated. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 statistical package program. The data were analyzed using one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) and t-test. According to the findings of the study, there was a significant difference in students’ scores from the attitude scale according to their gender and the faculties they belong to.
