Abstract


THE EFFECT OF USING DRAMA AND NARRATION METHODS IN TEACHING IDIOMS UPON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERMANENCE LEVELS OF 7TH GRADE STUDENTS
Idioms are among the most important expression elements of a language. Especially the fact that they have an implicit meaning and cliched expressions causes the education of idioms to be more difficult compared to other expression elements of a language. Thus, it is important to use different methods or technics in teaching idioms. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of using drama and narration methods in teaching idioms upon the academic achievements and permanence levels of 7th grade students. This is an experimental study with experimental and control group based on pretest-posttest. The study was conducted with 7/A (n=24), 7/B (n=24) and 7/C grades receiving education at an elementary school in Trabzon and the grades were assigned respectively as the drama group, narration group and control group. “Academic Achievement Test for Idioms” was used as the data collection tool in the study. As a result of the study, it was determined that 7th grade students receiving education with the drama and narration method had higher academic achievements compared to students receiving education with the expression method. Besides, it was also determined that students receiving education with the drama method had higher permanence levels in learning compared to students receiving education with other methods.
