Abstract
MEANINGS ASSIGNED TO THE CONCEPT OF TEXT BY TURKISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND THEIR OPINION ABOUT THE FEATURES THAT TEXTS MUST HAVE
The purpose of this study is to determine the meanings that Turkish Language teachers assign to the concept of “text” and detect the goodness of fit of these concepts with text features stated in Turkish Language Curriculum with reference to the mentioned items. The study has descriptive quality and the survey model was used in it. The study group of research consisted of 79 female and 67 male Turkish language teachers, 146 teachers in total, working in the province of Konya in 2014-2015 academic year. The meanings assigned to the concept of “text” were categorized under the titles of “education”, “text unit” and “language component” according to the answers given by Turkish language teachers to the form prepared the researchers. It was determined that teachers featured the factors including area of interest and appropriateness of the level, developing reading habit and linguistic consciousness, improving vocabulary in appropriate text features for students. Additionally, it has been determined from the opinions of the teachers that it is necessary to choose good samples of texts in terms of language, narration and content, and it is not pointed out sufficiently that the dimension of critical, creative and questioning thinking which underlies the base of a curriculum has an important role in text features.
