Abstract
THE EDUCATİONAL MODEL OF OTTOMAN MADRASAHS AND THE TÜRKİYE YÜZYILI MAARİF MODEL: A COMPARATİVE STUDY WİTH THE EXAMPLE OF MANİSA MADRASAHS
This study compares the Ottoman madrasa system with the Türkiye Yüzyılı Maarif Model (TYMM) to analyze how educational paradigms have transformed over time. The Ottoman education system was structured around Islamic sciences, with a teacher-centered approach that aimed to impart both religious and rational sciences to students. The curriculum in madrasas included Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), hadith, and theology (kalam), along with rational sciences such as astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. By the 19th century, Ottoman madrasas faced the necessity of reform due to the rise of Western modern education, leading to the emergence of new institutions like Darülfünun. The Türkiye Yüzyılı Maarif Model, on the other hand, adopts contemporary educational principles such as individualized learning, digitalization, skill-based education, and critical thinking. TYMM integrates a student-centered and technology-supported curriculum, aiming to synthesize the Ottoman educational heritage with modern pedagogical approaches. By examining the example of madrasas in Manisa, this study provides a regional perspective on the Ottoman education system. The similarities and differences between Ottoman and modern education systems are evaluated, highlighting how TYMM diverges from traditional Ottoman education while modernizing and incorporating certain elements.
