Abstract
EVALUATION OF THE PLACE OF INTELLIGENCE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE NEW UNDERSTANDING OF THEOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE IN TERMS OF ISMAIL OF IZMIR
İzmirli İsmail Hakkı is an important thinker who came to the fore with his efforts to defend traditional religious sciences and modern science and philosophy in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic. The center of his thought is the idea of establishing a balance between reason and revelation. According to him, reason is a fundamental tool in man's search for truth; however, revelation is a guide for the correct direction of reason in this search. With this approach, he presented a perspective that questioned the traditional methodology in Islamic theology and opened the door to comprehensive thoughts. He is an important part of the discussions in the Islamic world in the early 20th century on how the relationship between reason, science and religion could be redefined. This approach, developed by İzmirli by considering both the intellectual needs of Islamic society and the requirements of modern science and philosophy, is considered an important turning point in the evolution of religious thought.
