Abstract
THE USE OF PROVERBS IN TEACHING ARABIC
Proverbs are sentences that contain a certain provision and tell a lot in few words. They are also the most prominent reflective and carrier of culture which houses the life codes of a nation. The most comprehensive way to understand culture is to study the language of that culture. While learning a language, we see the culture with it, as it is necessary to know what kind of lifestyle it is in the places where that language is used. Since the proverbs reflect the language best, it will be very useful to use these sentences in foreign language teaching. In this way, while the student encounters many examples, he/she also meets the culture of the language. It is possible to see this teaching method in some dictionaries written in the past. In these dictionaries, proverbs were used in order to better explain the subject that is mentioned. While teaching Arabic, it is very useful to explain many subjects, especially grammar, with examples. Choosing the examples to be given from the proverbs will make the subject more permanent in the students' minds and make the lesson more colorful. Arabic is a very rich language in proverbs. The influence of the desert lifestyle, literature and religion on culture is clearly manifested in these sentences. It has been seen that proverbs should be used frequently in intermediate and advanced Arabic teaching.
