Abstract
A SEMANTIC ANALYSIS ON THE ETYMOLOGY AND MEANING OF THE CONCEPT OF ÂL
Language is the main element of a dynamic process that allows us to attribute meaning in our inner world to what we perceive in the outside world and convey this with words. Through this basic element, individuals convey their feelings and thoughts in verbal or written form. Language has also served as a bridge in the communication between past and present generations. Therefore, in order to possess the cultural heritage passed down by our ancestors, it is necessary to know the language of that time and understand the words and sentences they include. As a natural consequence of this, each society has adopted its own linguistic heritage and aimed topass it down to future generations by developing it. Due to being the language of the Qur'an, Arabic has been regarded as the common heritage of the whole Islamic world and each word and sentence has attracted the attention of Muslim scholars and subjected to many studies. With the present study, with the aim of contributing to previous studies, views regarding the etymology of the concept of “âl”, which is present in Arabic poetry and prose as well as certain verses of the Qur'an, will be referred to through semantic analysis while mostly the comments of glossators interpreting verses will be revealed in terms of the views regarding the meaning of the concept.
