Abstract


DETERMINING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING BY METAPHORS
Global warming is one of the most important problems of the world as a result of human activities. It is predicted that most of the world's countries will be affected by the climate change scenarios put forward as a result of the researches made by scientists. Turkey is among the countries that will be most affected in terms of its current location and climatic structure. In this study, it is aimed to determine the metaphors of secondary school students about the phenomenon of global warming. In this study, phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The study group of the research consists of a total of 80 students studying in the seventh grade of three different types of secondary schools providing formal education in Çanakkale in the 2021-2022 academic year. The data of the research “For me, Global Warming is like/similar to ………. It was collected through a semi-structured form with an incomplete statement such as "Because...". Content analysis method was used in the analysis and interpretation of the data obtained from the participants. It was determined that 40 valid metaphors were produced by 82 secondary school students who participated in the study. According to the similar and common features of the obtained metaphors; It is grouped under 5 conceptual categories. It has been determined that the metaphors produced by the students are mostly concentrated in the category of Global Warming as a Geographical Event/Concept. The metaphor produced the most by secondary school students was the season change metaphor.
