Abstract

WITHIN THE SCOPE OF SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS: ADIYAMAN
Sustainable logistics manages the effective and efficient flow of goods, information and other resources, including energy and people, between the point of origin and the point of consumption while meeting the increased demands from the society. In order to design such logistics systems, the basic components of the sustainability such as environmental, social and economic prospects must be considered. The primary objective in sustainable logistics is the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and consequently its adverse impact on the environment. Since in cities, the major source for emissions are the motor vehicles and the most CO2 gas emission is caused by the road transport, the transportation activities must be shifted to railway, seaway and inland waterway. In this work, within the scope of sustainable logistics, we refer briefly to the EURO standards applied for transport logistics in Europe and study the quality/quantity of fuel used in distribution activities by the logistics companies in the province Adıyaman and its impact on the environment. Due to the fact that there are no adequate logistics companies in the province and due to its distance to the major railway and seaway routes and since the companies in business haven’t yet realized the benefits of external sanctions completely, the transport logistics failed to reach the desired level. In the conducted survey, our interviews with the limited existing companies in Adıyaman showed that non-economic factors account for the state of underdevelopment in logistics in this province.
