Abstract

MISTAKES MADE BY RUSSIAN-SPEAKING STUDENTS WHILE WRITING IN TURKISH IN THE CONTEXT OF PROACTIVE INHIBITION
There are similarities, common uses, and differences between languages. Common uses are easily understood by students and enables high-level learning of the target language. While similarities provide convenience in learning, they cause learners to compare language structures, idioms, and proverbs with their native language in the learning process. The student understands the subject but makes mistakes in speaking and writing in the target language with the intervention of their native language. In other words, the native language inhibits the target language. This study aims to examine the language mistakes in terms of speaking and writing of A2 level students whose native language is Russian in the context of proactive inhibition. The study data were collected during the 2020-2021 education year at Minsk State Linguistic University, Faculty of Interpretation and Translation, from 24 students learning Turkish as a first language by examining their compositions written on 10 different topics, “Traditional Recipes”, “My Best Friend”, “My Last Summer Vacation”, “My Holiday Plan”, “My Habits and Hobbies”, “A Tale/Story For Us”, “A Summary of a Book or Movie We Like”, “A Famous Person of our Country”, “Climate and Natural Phenomena of our Country”, and “Our City”, in terms of morphology, lexicological and syntactic (syntax) errors.
