Abstract
APPLIED ANALYSIS OF MONA BAKER TRANSLATION STRATEGIES: EXAMPLES FROM THE TURKISH TRANSLATION OF ÉMILE ZOLA’S NOVEL “THÉRÈSE RAQUIN”
Translational scientists have developed many methods and techniques for translation as a result of long studies and experiences. The methods and techniques, which are accepted as translation strategies, are very important elements which help translators to solve the problems that they encounter during the translation process. Mona Baker, in her book, named In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (2011), which she wrote in translational science for prospective translators and those who interested in translation, has developed translation strategies under the titles of Translation by a more general word (superordinate), Translation by a more neutral/less, Translation by cultural substitution, Translation using a loan word, Translation by paraphrase, Translation by omission, Translation by illustration. In this study, we first examined these strategies and exemplified them for better understanding. Then, based on Şima Rondinelli’s translations of Émile Zola’s novel “Thérèse Raquin”which is from French to Turkish, we showed examples of the application of these strategies in literary translation on comparative texts. According to our findings; in terms of use of frequency, the translator mostly refers to the Strategy of Translation by paraphrase then to the strategies of Translation by cultural substitution, Translation by omission, Translation using a loan word, Translation by a more general word (superordinate) and Translation by illustration. Since the translator does not apply to the Strategy of Translation by a more neutral/less expressive word, an example of this strategy could not be given.
