Abstract
BROOM MAKING IN EDİRNE AND ITS CURRENT STATUS
Edirne has been conquered by Murat I in 1361 and served as the capital of Ottoman Empire Between 1361 and 1453 after Bursa. In this manner, a lot of artists and merchants came to Edirne, many arts and craft work developed in Edirne hereafter. Crafts such as Sericulture, saddlery, girth making, towel work, basketry, tannery, feltwork, carving, carpentry, case making, toy making, locksmithing, smithery, jewelry, coppersmith, halva making, candle making, mirror making began in Edirne and thrived significantly. Broom making in Edirne has an important place in traditional arts in Edirne. Best brooms are manufactured in Edirne. These brooms are used for cleaning and given to brides. Brooms given to brides are decorated with materials such as mirror, pompon, and beads. They are put as a dowry when prospective brides marry. There are several stories about brooms for brides in Edirne. One of them is about indicating when a girl is in her marriage age by hanging up a broom with a hobnail. Today, bridalbrooms are produced in miniature form and utilized as a touristic material, commercialized as mirrored brooms. Brooms for cleaning serve the same purpose as today's vacuum cleaners. Traditional broom-making lost its importance and is considered a forgotten craft in Edirne. As technology developed, the need for hand-made brooms gradually decreased.
