Abstract


AN INVESTIGATION ON THE READING HABITS OF ACADEMICIANS
The saying of Kant ‘Dare to use your own mind’ is a contemporary philisophy even at present although it dates back to old times. Contemporary life requires individual production of thoughts, to look critically to the environment and to know how to live by her/his ownself. Reading itself is a way to do this.The person who has reading habit will have the ability to speak fluently. His or her vision develops, knowledge accumulates. Recognize the places thats/he haven’t travel yet and get side a about the lives of others that s/he doesn’t know. It is known that the habit of reading is a habit that must be acquired from a young age. The person who aquires this habit does not give up read in geasily. Being a model for young people is very important in their reading skills. Teachers and academics, especially parents, are the role models in gaining reading habits.One of the aim of this study is; to present the opinions of academicians about reading skills and their thoughts about their reading habits. Thus, it is tried to make an evaluation about the opinions of the academicians, about their reading habits. Qualitative research method was used in the research. Research pattern is case study (casestudy) and data collection tool is interview. The study was carried out with academicians working Education Faculty at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University of 2017-2018 academic year. Six female and four male academicians were included in the study.As a result of the research, it was seen that academicians could not read literary genressuch as novels, stories and poems because they could not find enough time. However, all of the academicians participating in the study stated that they had read about their field.Considering the need to acquire the habit of reading at a young age, academicians think that libraries should be turned into more interesting places.
