Abstract

EVALUATION OF TURKISH-LEARNER SYRIAN STUDENTS REGARDING FAULT ANALYSIS IN TERMS OF WRITTEN EXPRESSION
The Turkish language has been productive and deep-rooted. It is among the mostly spoken languages across the world. Syria is one of the countries in which Turkish is mostly spoken. Syrian folk have always been in need of learning Turkish due to the commercial, cultural, military, diplomatic, etc. Relations between their home country and Turkey. Today, Syrian people who come to live in Turkey because of the civil war learn Turkish not only to meet their needs but also to move on with their academic lives. One of the major factors that facilitates the Turkish-learning process for Syrian people is that Turkey and Syria have a common cultural heritage and a borderline in between. Another factor is that both languages have quite a lot of common words. This makes Syrian people’s adaptation to Turkish language easier. Syrian people who live in Turkey are far more capable in listening and speaking skills as they are constantly in touch with the language. Yet, the success rate of Syrian students in terms of writing skills fall due to some reasons such as the alphabetical differences, students’ attitude, prejudice towards writing as a difficult skill and the limited writing practices in the class room environment. This study has been conducted regarding the error analysis of written expressions of 56 students at B2 level in Gaziantep University, TÖMER during 2015-2016 spring term in order to detect the reasons for the errors that Syrian students, who learn Turkish as a foreign language, make during writing classes and bring forward solutions.
