Abstract

THE RECOVERY GUSHING OUT FROM THE HILLSIDE OF ULUDAĞ: ÇİTLİ MINERAL WATER AND THE BOOK “ÇİTLİ MADEN SUYU” DATED 1887
Inegöl was one of the important centre on account of mineral water not only in Bursa but also in Turkey in Ottoman era. Çitli, Şeker, Bakmaca, Terce mineral waters were in Inegöl. Çitli mineral water, which was the first branded value of Inegöl, is located 11km away from the town centre and in the borders of the Çitli village. Mineral water has been used by the villagers who know the value of it for the cure of illnesses such as indigestion and skin problems for a long time. However, it was become more known and popular in the whole country as a result of this water preferred by Sultan Abdulaziz and Sultan Abdulhamid II. Çitli, which has been famous from the second half of the 19th century, has been a centre of attraction for a half century. An entrepreneur, named Rençberoğlu Angelos transformed this place to an economic value with the permission taken on November 8, 1866. Upon this, a rivalry occured for the franchise among the entrepreneurs. On December 1, 1871, with the renewed contract, operating right was transferred to pharmacist Della Suda Faik Paşa, who will have had this right for many years. Ahmet Vefik Paşa assigned the annual benefit acquired from the mineral water to Bursa Gureba Hospital with the decision dated February 22, 1881 during the years (1879-1882) when he was the governor of Bursa. For the transfer of water to Bursa and Istanbul and for the easy access of the customers to Çitli, a railway project, which starts from Mudanya and passing through Bursa and Inegol, came into question but it was not realized. In order to provide service to the patients who came because of the stomach upset, a hotel and a restaurant was built in the area. The Greeks, who were defeated in the Independence War, destroyed the site with the bomb while they were retreating. The water source was damaged and the water decreased. In 1887, a 16-page book named “Çitli Maden Suyu” was published. In this book, reports written by famous doctors about which illnesses the water is good for, took place. In this study, the book named “Çitli maden suyu” is brought in to the science world with translation writing. By this means, it is aimed to contribute to people who are interested in the topic.
