Abstract
THE EFFECTS OF URBAN TRANSFORMATION ON WORKING RELATIONS IN THE ROMANY DISTRICTS: A CASE STUDY OF GAZIPAŞA DISTRICT, SAKARYA
Urban transformation projects affect the dynamics of social life in the various field. The aim of the study is to determine the effects of urban transformation practices on Romany labour relations in Romany districts. In the scope of the research, interviewed with 15 Romanies before the urban transformation in 2014, and 13 Romanies during the urban transformation in 2017 in Gazipaşa district, which was once the largest Romany town in Sakarya and where urban transformation is now beginning. Findings are interpreted with descriptive analysis. According to the results of the research; urban transformation practices affect the peculiar and mostly self-enclosed labour relations of Romany districts. As a result, the Romany professions are facing the danger of extinction. Furthermore, Romanies faced with various problems such as discrimination in working life, social exclusion, informal employment, severe working conditions and working poverty under the influence of urban transformation.
