Abstract
ABOUT THE VOCABULARY OF CUTTING TOOLS IN DIVANU LUGATI’T-TURK
Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk is one of the most significant works of Turkish language. In addition to it is a rich source points of historical progress and vocabulary of Turkish language. The basic words in the vocabulary of languages occupy an essential place. These words, due to the characteristics they have are firstly to be categorical when studying the language interrelations, language differences, language teaching, language history and grammar. The numeral names, animal names, names of body organs, tools names in some other words, data coming from the science of lexicology are accepted as basic names in the vocabulary of languages by linguists.
Onomastic is a discipline that studies on the names of living and lifeless entities or abstract concepts. The most important thing separating objects is their names. Name is the meaning of word to help telling, defining and reporting anyone or anything. Tool names are the basic elements of languages. However, it is well known that there are few studies on onomastic in Turkish. Vocabulary of Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk, as every subject, consists of valuable information on tool names.
In this article, names belonging to the cutting tools in vocabulary of Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk will be determined and examined. It is known that in the modern Turkish language, some words show parallelism with Middle or Old Turkish. Therefore, the historical and contemporary Turkish dialects can be applied to explain words belonging to cutting tools in vocabulary of Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk. In the evaluation and conclusion section; the determinations revealed through the study have been presented as articled.
