Abstract
THE CRITERIA FOR A PHOTO TO BE A NEWS PHOTO THE EVALUATION OF THE NEWS PHOTOS ON NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS
Newspapers publish within a frame of publishing policy. The news they publish is an indicator of their perspectives on the news. Newspapers presented mainly as written and visually attach more importance to these two factors. Photographs are newspapers’ windows opening to the world. For the news to be “striking” as the terminology of journalism, it is necessary to pay attention to the rules determining the suitability of a photo for a news while deciding on a photo. Page editor, photo editor and the publishing policies of a newspaper significantly affect the choice of the right photo. However, a photo should meet certain criteria so that it can have an impact on readers regardless of the publishing policies. While criteria such as vividness, creativity, relevance and depth of meaning are taken into consideration on the news photo, the technical quality, the content and the esthetical aspects of a photo make it valuable. In this study, the degree of fulfillment of the news photography criteria has been attempted to be determined basing on the photos of the headline news on the front pages of the current national newspapers.
