Abstract
THE GODS AND GODDESSES ATTRIBUTED TO SOME NOUNS, ADJECTIVES, TITLE, AND COMPLIMENTS IN HITTITE
Hittites, which were one of the most important civilizations of the ancient Anatolian geography, left a great mark on cultural, economic, religious structure. Polytheist religions existed in Anatolian and Mesopotamian geography, therfore all civilizations interacted with each other.Hittites had also Gods of the lands that they occupied and acted in such a way that they did not want to fall victim to Gods’ wrath; as a result, they possessed a great pantheon which was formed by thousands of Gods.Hittites organized lots of rituels and feasts in order to please their Gods on each day of the year. In these rituels, they commemorate their Gods by calling out their names one by one.Hittite Kingdom honored their Gods by giving them tens of names and titles.They gave them new names and titles for greatness of their faith, for places they want to be protected and for anything they need and they tried to please their Gods with various titles.From time to time, they gathered some skills and titles in one God and assigned dual sexual nature to one God like God/goddess Ishtar order to norrow Pantheon.In this study, the titles and names that Hittites gave to their Gods will be focused on and socio-cultural, economic and particularly religious structures of the society will be made out by evaluating those titles and names.
