Abstract

ANALYSIS OF COMPONENTS OF PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT KNOWLEDGE: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND KNOWLEDGE OF LEARNERS
The purpose of this study is to analyze the knowledge of prospective elementary mathematics teachers regarding the group from mathematical systems within the context of components of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and knowledge of learners. Descriptive analysis, a qualitative research method, was employed. Participants of the study were 3 prospective teachers studying at the department of mathematics education at a state university, who were chosen on a volunteer basis by the method of purposive sampling. The data were collected by cam-recording the clinical interviews made with participants. Results of the study revealed that content knowledge of prospective teachers is insufficient meanwhile such content knowledge is unable to be used through association within various contexts. It was confirmed in the study that the prospective teachers who have been determined to possess some knowledge of pupils are not able to correct pupils’ errors due to the deficiency of proper strategies in their content knowledge. It is projected that when prospective teachers obtain a powerful grasp of their field, it would directly be reflected on the development of proper strategies against errors related to knowledge of learners.
