Abstract
AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS ON THE PHENOMENON OF MARTYRDOM IN ISLAMIC TRADITION
The phenomenon of martyrdom is one of the fundamental doctrines of religious traditions. However, when it comes to the Islamic ideal of martyrdom, especially in the Western literature, the concept has been associated with terrorism, suicide bombings and violence. Thus, the phenomenon of martyrdom is positioned as a basis for approaches that identify Islam with violence against the other.
This study will reveal how the Islamic notion of martyrdom is embedded in the fiqh tradition based on verses and hadiths. After that, the process of the word "martyr" gaining its meaning will be tried to be understood in the light of revelation, sunnah and socio-political historical experiences of Muslims.
