Abstract
A SPECIFIC CAREER PROPOSAL WHICH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC EXPOSES: GERIATRIC PHARMACY
According to data from the Statistics Institute of Turkey in our country in recent years, it is observed that the increase in the elderly population. Especially with the Covid-19 pandemic, which influences the whole world, the importance of geriatrics science has become more prominent. This study is about the concept of "geriatrics pharmacy", which can provide very beneficial results in the long term, based on the idea that elderly individuals who have an important share in our country will constitute a large part of the patient profile in the near future. The concept of geriatric pharmacy is advocated in this study as a specific career path for the pharmaceutical profession. Although it is an issue within the scope of clinical pharmacy, it is possible that geriatric pharmacy will have significant positive effects on the elderly, who are especially geriatric patients or potentially ill. For this purpose, literatüre review, which is one of the qualitative research methods, has been examined at the national and international level, and it has been revealed that geriatric pharmacy can be considered as a specific option in addition to the existing career paths in the pharmacy profession. As a result of the literatüre review, it is concluded that the current research in the field of geriatric pharmacy is carried out with clinical pharmacists in general, clinical pharmacists identify drug-related problems in geriatric patients significantly and develop reasonable suggestions for the solution of the problems. Inaddition, it has been observed that pharmacists' reasonable interventions in drug treatments provide positive results such as better quality drug treatment, increased patient satisfaction and reduced drug costs. As a result, it was thought that with the help of "geriatric pharmacy", opening a new specific career path in the field of specialization in the pharmaceutical profession and benefiting the geriatric individuals who constitute a significant part of the society within the scope of preventive and therapeutic health services.
