Abstract
TRADITIONAL DOORKNOCKERS AND KNOBS OF CAPITAL SITY OF EDIRNE
Having served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Edirne is also important for its traditional houses. Doorknobs on these houses were utilized and used for decoration.
A door knocker is an equipment which is used to attract the people inside, and open or close the door. Today’s door rings replaced the door knockers.
This study is aimed to detect and document the door knockers, which hold an indispensable place in houses in Edirne. Bearing in mind that door knockers in Edirne were not previously researched, this gives an authenticity to our research. Each traditional house with door knockers were detected and recorded specifying the neighborhood, avenue, Street and door numbers. Furthermore, door knockers and doorknobs in Edirne Ethnography and Archeology Museum have been analyzed.
There are 29 door knockers, 12 door rings in traditional houses Edirne that are still intact. There is 2 door knocker in Edirne Ethnography and Archeology Museum. We have identified 31 door knockers and 12 door rings in total, and we have examined them based on production technique, used material, decorative features.
