Abstract

PRESS COVERAGE OF SYRIAN MIGRANTS LIFESPACES SINCE 2011
After the political confusions at March 2011, according to the data released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCR) more than 6.5 million people have sought refuge in various countries from Syria that had a population of 20 million before. About 5.5 million of those are migrating in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and about 1 million have migrated to various EU member countries. Syrian refugees try to continue on their new lives in living spaces(new homes) such as sheltering centres, tent camps, urban settlements in the countries where they migrate. The conditions and formations of these living spaces show diversity according to the countries' approaches to immigration policies and in some cases, these policies are different in metropolitan cities within the same country. As in the World Press, these living spaces are also reported as news in varied topics in the Turkish Press too. Through this news, it is possible to see the diversity of Syrians' living spaces, compare the practices of the countries, to question their suitability for human rights and most importantly to determine the development process occurring between 2011-2018. With this study, the new living spaces in the countries where Syrian migrants migrated between 2011-2018 were determined through the news in local and foreign press sources. Thus, through the press sources utilized, the evaluations of these spaces on the society and their perceptions on the society, their level of acceptability or externalization, their suitability to humanitarian conditions were evaluated. In addition, it is aimed to bring a critical point of view to the architectural or different disciplines studies and projects which have the focus of the Syrian migrants.
