Abstract


AN ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE FOR EDUCATION OF THE DISABLED: SOCIAL RESPECT PROVISION FOR THE BLIND THROUGH MEMORIZING QURAN (BLIND HAFIZES IN ADIYAMAN FROM OTTOMAN TO REPUBLICAN PERIODS)
In the last decades of Ottoman Empire, trachoma, especially with Egyptian and Syrian origin, spread throughout the country and affected a significant part of the society. Trachoma infection left its victims either partly visually impaired or totally blind, which was non-recoverable. Adıyaman (Hısn-ı Mansur) stood out in Turkey with the highest trachoma frequency coincidence, thus, even named as the “homeland of the blind”. As the high frequency of blinds in the city, these impaired people were provided with Quran Memorizing Education, through which they could participate into society as respected citizens. Present study explores the way how those impaired citizen were supported to adapt to and participate into the society through provision of Quran Memorizing Education.
