Abstract
GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DIGITAL DIVIDE MAP IN IRAQ
Discusses the analysis of the digital divide in Iraq, particularly focusing on the geographic distribution and usage of internet technologies. It emphasizes the crucial role that information and communication technologies (ICT) play in accelerating progress towards sustainable development goals. The study presents arguments for the positive impact of technology on reducing transaction costs, improving service delivery, generating new jobs, and creating diverse sources of revenue while preserving natural resources.
Despite advancements in technology, Iraq still faces formidable challenges in harnessing its potential to address the digital divide effectively. These challenges include low absorption capacity, digital infrastructure issues, and the need for national strategies to enhance research, development, and innovation in the digital sector. The report highlights that monitoring the digital divide through indicators like the Information Development Index (IDI) serves as a good measure for assessing technological advancements in Iraq.
Data presented from 2022 reveals an internet usage rate of approximately 79.6%, with notable disparities between genders. The internet utilization rate among males exceeds that of females, reflecting socio-cultural norms that disadvantage women, particularly in rural areas. For instance, Baghdad emerges as the leading area for internet access, whereas other regions like Al- Muthanna and Wasit experience significantly lower access rates due to investment shortfall and limited infrastructure.
The study outlines four types of digital divide - categorized by gender, educational status, and age groups - and aims to paint a comprehensive picture of internet use across various demographics in Iraq. It underscores the urgent need for initiatives that enhance connectivity, particularly targeting underrepresented groups to promote equity in digital access and usage. Addressing these gaps is essential not only for individual empowerment but also for national development and economic growth.
Ultimately, the document underscores the necessity for strategic investment in ICT to bridge the digital divide and achieve a more inclusive digital landscape in Iraq.
